Junior guard from Long Island scored a school record 40 points on Saturday
NEW YORK – Following her record-breaking 40-point performance, Columbia women's basketball's Riley Weiss has been named Ivy League Player of the Week for games played January 20-26. This is Weiss's third selection of the season.
Weiss scored a Columbia women's basketball record 40 points in Saturday's 89-32 win over Dartmouth. It broke the previous record of 39 points, set by Ellen Bossert '86BC on Feb. 17, 1986. Weiss went 15-of-23 from the field and 9-for-13 from 3-point range, also breaking the single-game record for field goals made and tying the record for 3-pointers made.
The junior from Long Island (Hewlett, N.Y) scored 26 first-half points, which is a Columbia record for points in a half. She was 10-of-16 from the field and 5-of-8 from deep in the opening 20 minutes alone. At that point, the Lions were well in front, leading the Big Green 40-14.
Weiss's 40-point performance was the 12th in Ivy League women's basketball history. It is the 17th 40-point game in the NCAA this season.
Weiss is the Ivy League's leading scorer at 18.6 points per game on the season. She also leads the Ancient Eight in total points (335), 3-pointers made (43) and field goals made (120), while ranking second in 3-point percentage (.319) and sixth in field goal percentage (.401).
Columbia ultimately held Dartmouth to just 32 points, which is a program record for the fewest against a Div. I opponent. The 57-point margin of victory is also Columbia's largest ever against a Div. I opponent.
Columbia (13-5, 4-1 Ivy) now prepares for back-to-back Ivy League road games this weekend. The Lions will take on No. 20 Princeton (14-1, 5-0 Ivy) on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by Penn (12-6, 2-3 Ivy) on Saturday at 5 p.m. Friday's game against the Tigers will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
