Lions finish regular season with most wins since the 1996-97 season
NEW YORK – The 25th-ranked Columbia wrestling team powered past Bucknell 30-6 in a dominant performance, winning eight of 10 bouts and securing three bonus-point victories.
Columbia extends its winning streak to nine matches and wraps up its dual season with an impressive 11-3 record overall. It is the most wins since the 1996-97 team finished the year 12-6.
The Lions set the tone early and never relinquished control, building a 7-0 lead through the opening two matches. At 125 pounds, Sulayman Bah opened the dual with a 14-6 major decision over Kade Davidheiser to put the Lions on the board. Evin Gursoy followed with a 4-2 decision at 133, giving Columbia an early cushion.
Bucknell (7-12) got on the board at 141, where No. 29 Dylan Chappell defeated No. 21 Lorenzo Frezza, 14-10, trimming the margin to 7-3. Frezza made it a thrilling finish, after trailing 11-4 after the second period, he recorded two late takedowns.
Columia responded immediately. Richard Fedalen earned a 5-2 decision at 149 to push the lead to 10-3, and No. 20 Kai Owen added a 9-0 major decision at 157 to extend the advantage to 14-3.
