
Lions Take Down Big Red to Open ECAC Indoor Championships

Gayathri Krishnan clinches it on court two for Columbia
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Columbia women's tennis team defeated sixth-seeded Cornell 4-2 in the opening round of the ECAC Indoor Championships on Friday at the Lenz Tennis Center.
Columbia (3-1) captured the match's early momentum, winning the doubles point. It marks the fourth time this season the Lions have captured the doubles point. Columbia's top duo of Malak El Allami and Amber Yin improved to 2-0 this spring and 8-1 on the year after defeating Cornell's (2-2) top duo of Victoria Zhao and Martina Marcia 6-4.
Emily Baek and Sophia Wang clinched the doubles point on court three, defeating the Big Red's Emma Baker and Dylan Gelber 6-4. Gayathri Krishnan and Sabrina Lin were leading 4-3 over Cornell's Michelle Ryndin and Sage Loudon when the match was abandoned.
Leading 1-0, Wang made it 2-0 in favor of the Lions after defeating Zhao in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-1 on court three.
The Big Red tied the match at 2-2 with wins on courts four and five. Margaret Hui moved the Lions closer to the win with a thrilling three-set win over Baker. After dropping the first set 6(4)-7, Hui stormed back to defeat Baker 6-2, 6-0 in the second and third sets.
Leading 3-2, Krishan clinched it on court two, coming back to defeat Loudon in three sets. Like Hui, Krishan lost the opening set 4-6 and battled back, winning the second and third sets 7-6, 6-4.
Columbia returns to action on Saturday for the semifinal round of the ECAC Championships. The Lions will take on the winner of No.2 Penn/No. 7 Dartmouth at 5 p.m.
