The Lions have qualified the maximum of 24 fencers in their bid to secure NCAA Championship spots
NEW YORK — Columbia fencing will send the maximum 24 qualifiers (12 men, 12 women) to the NCAA Northeast Regionals, hosted by Vassar, on Sunday, March 8. The Lions will face off against the region's best during the one-day event.
The competition will begin at 10 a.m. with pool play, followed by the knockout rounds in the afternoon.
The Columbia men and women are both ranked No. 1 in the United States Fencing Coaches Association's SPI metric and the coaches poll. The women finished the dual meet season with a 28-1 record, and the men were 24-3 on the year.
The Lions have seven medalists from the 2025 NCAA Regionals returning to the lineup this weekend. Marsel Nagimov won gold in men's foil, Zander Rhodes finished first in women's foil and Tierna Oxenreider won women's epee. Will Morrill (men's sabre) earned silver, while Carolina Stuchbury (women's foil), Samarth Kumbla (men's foil) and Tamar Gordon (women's sabre) picked up bronze.
In total, 11 fencers have NCAA Regional experience under their belts. Rhodes has medaled in each of her three previous appearances at the event. Seniors Evelyn Cheng (women's foil) and Skyler Liverant (men's epee) have been four-time participants, with Liverant earning silver in 2023. Nick Harvey will be making his third trip to Regionals in men's sabre.
Additionally, senior Colby Harley (men's sabre) is back at Regionals for the first time since his silver medal performance in 2023. He has missed the last two postseasons due to injury.
The NCAA Northeast Regional competition helps determine the fencers who qualify for the NCAA Division I National Championship, which will take place at Notre Dame from March 19-22.
Only Columbia's top two fencers for the six weapons (six men's and six women's) can qualify for the National Championships. No qualifiers are official until the NCAA's announcement on Tuesday, March 10, when NCAA Championship selections are posted.
