Andrew Kotzen notches first two career singles dual wins, Lions flex their depth
NEW YORK – The 25th-ranked Columbia men's tennis team displayed its depth on Saturday, with a pair of lopsided victories, both coming without ranked seniors Michael Zheng and Sachin Palta.
Columbia improves to 8-4 in the spring and has now won three in a row and six of its last seven matches. They opened Saturday with a 7-0 win over Quinnipiac (3-5) before roasting local rival Fordham (4-8) 5-0.
Sophomore Andrew Kotzen had a big day; he recorded his first career dual singles win against Quinnipiac and followed it up with another straight-sets win against Fordham.
QUINNIPIAC MATCH RECAP
Columbia secured the doubles point with wins on all three courts. Jordan Chang and Andrew Kotzen opened with a 6-1 win at No. 3, followed by a 6-2 victory from Thanaphat Boosarawongse and Abhishek Thorat at No. 2. The No. 51 duo of Nicolas Kotzen and Andrew Ena completed the sweep with a 6-4 win at the top spot.
The Lions carried that momentum into singles, winning all six matches in straight sets. Boosarawongse led the way with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2. Thorat added a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3, while Chang earned a 6-2, 6-1 result at No. 4, and Jung Hee You followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
At the top spot, No. 30 Nicolas Kotzen defeated Vishal Prakash, 6-3, 6-4, and Andrew Kotzen closed the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 as Columbia completed the shutout. The win for A. Kotzen was his first collegiate dual win.
FORDHAM MATCH RECAP
Columbia secured the doubles point with victories on Courts 2 and 3. Thanaphat Boosarawongse and Abhishek Thorat earned a 6-1 win, while Jordan Chang and Andrew Kotzen followed with a 6-3 victory to clinch the point.
The Lions closed out the match with four completed singles wins. N. Kotzen led the way with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the top spot. A. Kotzen added a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6, and You posted a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 5. You trailed 4-1 in the second set but rallied back to secure the straight-sets victory.
Boosarawongse clinched the match for Columbia with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. Matches at Nos. 3 and 4 went unfinished after the Lions secured the victory.
The Lions return to action on Tuesday, hosting Delaware. That match is scheduled for a 5 p.m. first serve.
