WIMBLEDON – Columbia men's tennis alum Michael Zheng (CC26) has advanced to the second round at Wimbledon following a thrilling five-set win over No. 29 Cameron Norrie, winning 6(7)-7(9), 6-2, 6(2)-7(7), 6-3, 7(10)-6(4).
The win is Zheng's first career victory at Wimbledon and his first over a player ranked in the ATP top 50. Zheng's serve proved to be a huge difference in the win, with the native of Montville, N.J., recording 21 aces. Norrie had 10 double faults compared to Zheng's four.
Zheng forced a fifth and deciding set, thanks to a dominating 6-3 win in the fourth set. In the fifth, Zheng sent the match to a crucial tiebreak with a backhand volley winner. The shot of the day for Zheng was a cross-court forehand winner to make it 9-4.
