Zheng falls to Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime
WIMBLEDON – Columbia men's tennis alum Michael Zheng's (CC26) fantastic run at Wimbledon has come to an end following a 6-7(7), 2-6, 1-6 defeat at the hands of No. 3 Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada.
Zheng's run at Wimbledon began with a strong showing in the qualifiers, where he won three matches in a row, setting up a showdown against Great Britain's Cameron Norrie in the opening round. Zheng battled and took down the top-ranked British player in the tournament with a 6-7(9), 6-2, 6-7(7), 6-3, 7(10)-6(4) win. It was Zheng's first career win at Wimbledon and his first career win over a player ranked in the ATP top-50 rankings.
The native of Montville, N.J., followed that up with a stellar, four-set win over Colombia's Nicolas Mejia (6-7(7), 7(10)-6, 6-1, 6-4. In the first and second rounds, Zheng's punishing serve played a crucial role. He notched over 40 aces and won over 78 percent of his points on the opening serve.
In the third round against the top-ranked Canadian, that changed. Zheng notched just four aces, compared to Auger-Aliassime's 10. Auger-Aliassime also won 50 percent of his break opportunities, while Zhen went 0-for-2.
With Zheng's run at Wimbledon complete, he now turns his attention to the US Open later this summer. Should he gain entry into the Main Draw, it will be the fourth Grand Slam this year for Zheng, having already competed at the Australian Open and the French Open.
