2009 Women's Ivy League Swimming & Diving Championships - Event Format

CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT

The Ivy League Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships is a three-day individual and team championship, with trials and final competition except in the 1000-yard freestyle, 1650-yard freestyle, 400-free relay and 800-yard freestyle relay which shall be timed events.  The championship heat of the 400 and 800-yard freestyle relays will be swum in the finals only; teams have the option to swim a 400-free relay in the prelims.   The 1000-yard freestyle and 1650-yard freestyle will be swum slowest-to-fastest with the last heat swum during the evening finals.  All but the fastest heat of the 1000-yard freestyle will swim at the end of the Friday morning preliminaries.  All but the fastest heat of the 1650-yard freestyle will swim starting approximately 4:00pm on Saturday afternoon.  The exact schedule will be posted following the scratch deadline.

In all prelims/finals swimming events, the evening finals will consist of a scoring bonus final, consolation final and a championship final.  Eight lanes will be used for all competitions and 24 places will be scored.  There will be no scratches permitted for the top 24 qualifiers from the morning preliminaries.  Competitors in the Championship Finals, as well as the fastest heats of the 1000 free, 1650 free and 800-yard freestyle relay, will march out from the “ready area” immediately before competing.

DIVING FORMAT:

For both the one-meter and three meter diving, there will be 7 judges for the preliminary rounds and 5 judges for the consolation finals and the finals.  Any school with an athlete participating in the three-meter preliminary must have their diving coach available to serve as a judge for the three-meter preliminary round (Friday afternoon), three-meter consolation round (Friday evening) and the three-meter championship round (Saturday evening).  The judging panels for the consolation rounds will be determined after the completion of the preliminary rounds.

One-Meter Diving:
Preliminaries: One-meter preliminaries will begin following the conclusion of the Thursday morning session, February 26th.  The start time will be approximately 1:30.  Each diver will perform six optional dives, including one from each of five groups, in any order, without limit on degree of difficulty.  Scores on all dives performed by each diver in the preliminaries will be used to determine placing at the conclusion of preliminaries.  The top eight divers will continue into finals.  Divers in 9th through 16th place will participate in the Consolation Finals.  Divers in 17th through 24th place will have no opportunity to advance in place.

Consolation Finals:  Following the One-Meter Preliminaries and after a brief warm up period, divers in 9th through 16th place, will start with a score of zero and perform six optional dives, including one from each of five groups, in any order, without limit on degree of difficulty.  Scores on all dives performed by each diver in the consolation finals will be used to determine 9th through 16th place.

Finals: One-meter finals will take place during the championship finals session on Thursday evening, February 26th.  The eight finalists will start with a score of zero.  The finals will consist of six optional dives, including one from each of the five groups, in any order, without limit on degree of difficulty.  Scores on all dives performed by each diver in the finals will be used to determine first through eighth place.

Three-Meter Diving:
Preliminaries: Three-meter preliminaries will begin following the conclusion of the Friday morning session, February 27th.  Each diver will perform six optional dives, including one from each of five groups, in any order, without limit on degree of difficulty.  Scores on all dives performed by each diver in the preliminaries will be used to determine placing at the conclusion of preliminaries.  The top eight divers will continue into the finals.  Divers in 9th through 16th place will participate in the Consolation Finals.  Divers in 17th through 24th place will have no opportunity to advance in place.
