Columbia's track and field squads began their spring season with strong performances at the Quaker Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa. The Lions won six events on the day.
Columbia's women won four events while placing in a number of others. Senior Caryn Waterson was a champion in two events as she took the women's 800m race with a time of 2:11.56 and was a member of the 4X800m squad that won its race by over 20 seconds. The relay team of Waterson, Sarah Decker, Kurstin Nelms and Lauren Rauck won with a time of 9:18.52, nearly half a minute in front of the second place finishers from Penn.
The Lions swept the top three positions in the women's 400m hurdles as underclassmen Katy Schlichtman, Osamuede Iyoha and Whitney Crayton paced the field. Schlichtman edged Iyoha by .1 seconds, finishing at 1:03.10.
Ann Marie Doroba won the women's high jump with a top mark of 1.55m. It was Doroba's first individual title as a Lion. Janice Burrell placed second in the women's 200m and fourth in the 400m. Susan Hendrick placed second in the 1500m while Loretta Kilmer and Sarah Decker placed in the event as well.
On the men's side, Ivy League 400m champion Erison Hurtault bumped up to the 800m race and won the event. Hurtault ran a 1.53.82 to take the title for the Lions. The 4X800 team duplicated the women's feat by winning its event as well. Jonah Rathbun, Justin Fiske, Kent Collins and John Hiestand combined for a 7:54.20 to win their event by over two seconds.
Senior Patrick Horst won the men's triple jump with a 13.8m effort. He won by .30 meters.
The Lions also have a group of student-athletes competing at the Stanford Invitational this weekend. Results of that event will be posted when available.
