NEW YORK, N.Y. - You know when the national rankings of your two opponents for the week add up to less than 10, it is going to be a challenging week.
Seventh-ranked Dartmouth scored four unanswered goals in the first 6:03 of the game to defeat Columbia, 19-3, at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium.
The Big Green (6-0, 2-0 Ivy) got on the board 48 seconds into the contest on a goal by Katieanne Christian, then added scores at 3:23, 5:42, and what would prove to be the game-winner by Casey Hazel at 6:03.
The teams exchanged goals for the next five minutes as the Lions (4-2, 0-2 Ivy) got their first goal by Kate Lombard at 7:30, Dartmouth scored at 8:05, first-year Catherine Lee took a nice feed from classmate Marisa Marcellino for a goal at 9:02, and Dartmouth went up 6-2 on a goal at 10:45. It would be the first of six consecutive goals for the Big Green to build an 11-2 lead.
Senior co-captain Liz Sanseau scored what would be Columbia's final goal on a free position shot with 6:52 remaining in the first half to make the score 11-3. Dartmouth scored the final eight goals of the contest, including a 7-0 advantage in the second half.
Marcela Calidonio made eight saves in goal for the Lions, caused two turnovers and collected a team-high four ground balls. Her eight saves gave her 335 for her career, which makes her Columbia's all-time leader in that category. She passed Jana Gombos '99C, who had 332.
Marcellino and junior co-captain Carrie Anderer each had three draw controls to lead the Lions.
For Dartmouth, Christian, Jen Pittman and Sarah Szefi each scored three times.
Columbia is back in action vs. Quinnipiac on Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. at Wien Stadium.
