Name the Columbia Lion!

Later this fall, Columbia Athletics will introduce a new Lion mascot. The Columbia Lion will be one of the most fierce yet fan-friendly and entertaining mascots in the country. However, our new mascot cannot be truly great until it receives a great name. Columbia Athletics wants the help of our friends and fans to name our new mascot.

Starting today (September 12, 2005), nominations are being accepted for the new name of the Columbia Lion mascot via email and fax - or in person at select Columbia Athletics contests. Entries must be submitted by October 2, 2005.

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education will choose five finalists from the pool of all submitted entries. Starting October 3rd and continuing to October 12th, fans will be allowed to vote (by email and in-person) for their favorite name from the list of finalists.

The new Columbia Lion mascot will be unveiled at Baker Field at Homecoming 2005 on October 15. One fan selected at random from the pool of entries submitting the winning name will be awarded a grand prize
at the Columbia/Penn Homecoming football game on October 15.

What's in a Name?
Use your imagination! Preferably, our Columbia Lion will have a creative, fun name symbolizing the spirit and tradition of Columbia University in the City of New York. Our mascot will represent the entire Columbia community; it will be smart, regal, loud, proud, strong, courageous, clever, friendly and dignified.
