Sophomore Vinay Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor, N.J.) and first-years Ilia Shatashvili (Princeton, N.J.) and Jake Feldman all won their first round matches at the Penn Classic. Bhamidipati also teamed with Shatashvili to reach the quarterfinals of the doubles draw.
Bhamidipati defeated Andy Magnes of Penn, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, to grab a spot in the second round. He will face another Quaker there as he takes on Jeremy Steglitz. Shatashvili reached the second round as well, but faces a tough opponent in 5th seeded Diego Alvarado of Manhattan. Shastashvili topped Billy Griffin of Navy in straight sets in the first round. Jake Feldman defeated Chris Caltrikas of Temple in straight sets as well. Marty Moore dropped his first round match, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6, to Todd Lecher of Penn.
In doubles action, the duo of Bhamidipati and Shatashvili upset the fourth seeded team in the draw to reach the quarterfinals. After defeating a team from Rutgers in the first round, the two Lions handled James/Jones of Navy, 8-3, to secure a spot in the round of eight. There they will have to pull off another upset as they face second seeded Lavner/O'Gara of Penn.
The tournament continues on Saturday with doubles and singles action.
