STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Columbia defense stifled Stony Brook throughout the match and Tom Smith scored his first collegiate goal to lift the Lions to a 1-0 win.
Columbia (3-4) put four shots on net in the first half, but Stony Brook keeper EJ Xikis was up to the task, stopping them all. The Lions were in such control during the stanza that Stony Brook did not register a single shot during the half.
Just 46 seconds into the second half, Smith fired home a cross from sophomore Drew Ford (St. Petersburg, Fla.) that beat Xikis to his left, giving Columbia a 1-0 edge on the first-year's tally.
Stony Brook (4-2-1) fired off seven shots in the second half, and sophomore keeper Michael Testa (Manhasset Hills, N.Y.) made one save and secured his first career shutout victory as the Lions held the slim one-goal margin for the remainder of the match.
Senior defender Blake Lindberg (New Orleans, La.) and sophomore midfielder Tom Heinbockel (Seaford, N.Y.) were both named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts in controlling the backline and midfield, respectively, during the Stony Brook match.
In Columbia's seven matches this season, this was the sixth decided by one goal. In those six matches, the Lions are 3-3.
Next up for the Lions is a matchup at Quinnipiac on Thursday, September 22. Game time is 5 p.m.
