NEW YORK, N.Y. - Junior Laura Cosan's (BC-San Diego, Calif.) goal at 16:38 proved to be all the offense Columbia needed as they stunned perennial Colonial Athletic Association powerhouse Hofstra 1-0 in Hempstead, N.Y. The Lions are 6-6, marking the third-most wins in Columbia history and the most victories since 2000.

The teams were dormant the first ten minutes of the game, but at 16:38, Liz Reeve (CC-San Diego, Calif.) passed the ball from the right side of the cage to Cosan who was just left of center. Cosan shot the ball in a deep lunge and skirted the ball under the legs of the splitting Hofstra goalie, Jess Cowperthwait.

Hofstra blitzed the Lions with 12 shots on goal, but either a Columbia defender blocked the shot or Lions' keeper Kristina George (CC-Encinitas, Calif.) mad the save. In the final two minutes of play, Hofstra got off four shots on goal; two went wide and two were point-blank saves by George.

Hofstra, now 10-4 on the season, had nine corners to Columbia's two. Columbia had not defeated the Pride since a 4-3 victory in 2000. The Pride's previous three losses this season were all against ranked opponents.

The Lions return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Hanover, N.H. to face Dartmouth in an Ivy League contest.
