West Point, N.Y. - Columbia women's soccer won its third consecutive match by defeating Army 1-0 at West Point. Lucie Kroening (C-Oakland, Calif.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 74th minute for the game winner and goalkeepers Erissa Aronson (B-Woodmere, N.Y.) and Allison Vespa (C-Franklin Lakes, N.J.) combined for the Lions' third straight shutout. Columbia (3-2-0) has won all three matches by a score of 1-0.
The Lions broke open the tightly fought affair 15 minutes from time when Shannon Munoz (C-Coto De Caza, Calif.) lofted a free kick into the box that Kroening bravely headed home for her first goal and the eventual match decider. Columbia and Army both took 11 shots in the match, but the Lions were the only team able to find the net. With the assist Munoz continued her streak of involvement in every Columbia goal this season. The sophomore forward has two goals and two assists on the year.
Aronson and Vespa each played a half to split the clean sheet. Each recorded a shutout over the weekend, Aronson against Wagner and Vespa against LIU, so the Lions have not allowed a goal in over four and a half hours of play. Columbia has allowed only three goals in its five matches.
With the win the Lions have registered the first three game winning streak since September 30th through October 9th of 2001. They look to extend that streak on Friday when they face Albany at the capital at the Governor's Cup Tournament.
