 THE FACILITY
For nearly 70 years, Chrystie Field House has served Columbia Athletics in a variety of functions. Centrally located at Columbia’s Baker Athletics Complex, the two-story, three-level Chrystie Field House serves as home to locker rooms for Columbia’s football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s lacrosse, field hockey, baseball, and softball programs. It also houses Columbia’s full-service athletic training facility, a full-service equipment room, team meeting room, media room, and other administrative offices. Additionally, visiting team locker rooms and Columbia’s facility maintenance department is located in the venue’s basement.

On October 11, 1964, former Columbia President Dr. Grayson Kirk renamed the field house for New York lawyer Thomas W. Chrystie who died in 1956, and his father, the late T. Ludlow Chrystie. The younger Chrystie was a 1924 Columbia College graduate and his father was an 1892 graduate. Thomas W. Chrystie served as Columbia’s 51st alumni trustee, while his father was the University’s 12th alumni trustee.

As part of Columbia’s Baker Athletics Complex, located at the corner of 218th Street and Broadway Avenue at the northern tip of Manhattan, Chrystie Field House is surrounded by Columbia’s athletic facilities including Campbell Sports Center, Columbia Field Hockey Stadium, Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium, Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium and Robertson Field at Satow Stadium and the Columbia Softball Stadium.

The tract of land on which the Baker Athletics Complex stands was purchased for the University on December 30, 1921, by financier George F. Baker. Then a $700,000 gift, the 26-acre area was dedicated in April 1922 and hosted spring football practice that same year.
