Box Score Highlight: Mahoney Save

The Lions put together scoring chances late; Mahoney tallies three saves

NEW YORK — Columbia women's soccer played St. John's to a 0-0 draw at Sunday's home opener from Rocco B. Commisso Stadium.

Columbia (0-0-2) and St. John's (1-2-1) both had three shots on goal on the afternoon. Columbia's Dema Elder, Evelyn Javers, and Helena Andrzejewski each had a shot on frame. Goalkeeper Samantha Mahoney recorded three saves, with two coming in the first half.

A scoreless first half featured just two shots on goal from St. John's. The Red Storm's best chance on goal in the opening half came in the 28th minute when Mahoney punched out a shot from Nora Basile off a turnover.

Mahoney's other save in the first half was in the 36th minute. The Lions' first offensive threat was 20:55 into the match when Nicole Kim sent a shot high. Gabby Chan had an attempt in the 25th minute that sailed over the crossbar.

Columbia controlled the offensive tempo early in the second half. The Lions fired off three straight shots, with two on net. In the 52nd minute, Elder took a shot low and center. Nearly seven minutes later, Javers aimed for the bottom left corner and was denied. St. John's goalkeeper Kayla Bower was able to keep both attempts out.

Columbia's biggest scoring chance of the day was in the 88th minute. From just inside the penalty box, Andrzejewski ripped a shot to the top right corner but Bower punched it out for her third save of the half.

The Lions had five corners in the second half to the Red Storm's one. Columbia is back in action on Thursday, August 27, against Villanova at Rocco B. Commisso Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
