The Lions came out blazing, winning the first two games 30-22 and 30-25. In the first game, Columbia took an early 3-0 lead and didn't look back, keeping the lead until the end of the game. At the start of the second game, the Lions grabbed another early lead, but Penn was able to get an 11-8 advantage. The game continued to go back and forth and Columbia was able to get a short surge at towards the end of the game to obtain a 28-23 lead to help them win.
The third game was the closest of the match, with no team gaining a real advantage. The Quakers pulled out the 30-28 win. The fourth game was another close one with the Lions trailing for most of the game. Columbia was able to pull within one point at 27-28 but a kill and a service ace by Anna Shilmark gave the Quakers the 30-27 win.
In the final game, Columbia jumped out to a 4-0 lead. After a Penn timeout, the Quakers gained composure and tied the game at six. The two teams stayed within one point of each other until two attack errors in a row by the Quakers gave the Lions a 13-11 advantage. A kill from Viti ended the game and the match and made her the new record holder for kills in a match.
With her 34 kills, Viti passed Madia Willis, who had 33 kills versus Harvard on November 17th in 2001. Ligh picked up a record of her own with 35 digs, topping Katie Beauregard, who had 31 digs against Cornell on October 22 in 1999. Also scoring double digits for the Lions was junior Nikki Learned with 11 kills, sophomore Shannon Hunzicker with 13 digs, sophomore Natalie Gerling with 16 kills and first-year Ashley Kim with 19 digs. The Lions look for the weekend sweep as they take on Princeton on Saturday, October 15th at 4 p.m. in Levien Gymnasium.
