"This is our longest road trip. It makes it a little more difficult than the other trips," said head coach Monica Holmes. "It was still a successful weekend, we beat Harvard [in Cambridge]... I don't know when the last time a Columbia volleyball team has done that... and the great thing about the league round-robin schedule is that we get to play Dartmouth again in our place."
The Big Green came out strong at the start of the match. Dartmouth claimed the first set 30-26. The Lions pulled back from a 21-14 deficit to close the gap to 28-26, but Dartmouth was able to pull away for the first game, and never looked back for the rest of the match.
Shannon Hunzicker had 27 assists for Columbia. Once again, Amalia Viti led the Lions in kills, with 12.
"I think Amalia is so incredibly athletic that she has the ability to take over a match," says Holmes. "She's still learning how to do that. She's just so much fun to watch out on the court."
The Lions begin the second leg of Ivy League round-robin competition next weekend with matches at Yale on Friday, October 28 and at Brown on Saturday, October 29.
"We've matched up pretty well against everyone in the conference, so we know we can play volleyball with anyone in the Ivy League," says Holmes. The Lions are now 3-4 in Ivy League play, 5-13 overall.
