
Volleyball Loses In Three To Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. - Despite first-year Amalia Viti having 13 kills, Columbia lost to Cornell 3-0. The Lions are now 6-17, 4-8 Ivy.
Cornell scored game one's first two points, but Columbia scrambled back to take a 5-3 lead on a kill by Viti. The Lions traded points to 8-6, then watched as the Big Red took eight of the next 11 points, to regain the lead. The lead grew to 16-12 on a hitting error by the Lions, but Columbia continued to stick around, bring the score within two points, but a 5-0 run by the Big Red extended the lead to 21-14. The Big Red traded side-outs to 25-19 before another scoring rally. Cornell's Elizabeth Bishophad her fifth kill of the game to made it 27-21 and the game ended after a kill by Rachel Adomat at 30-25.
Much like game one, Cornell opened up a quick 3-1 lead, but continued to build and didn't let the Lions back in. In a blink the advantage grew to 11-3 to force a Columbia timeout. The Lions couldn't stop the Big Red's momentum, losing the game 30-15.
Columbia gained the early edge at 6-3 in the third game. Cornell tied the contest then took the lead behind a pair of Bishop kills, but the Lions quickly tied the game at 12-12. Alex Dyer kills put Cornell back ahead at 13-12, then again at 15-14, and her third kill in the series tied the contest at 17-17. With the score tied at 20-20, first-year Kelly Russell served consecutive aces to give the Lions a two-point cushion. After a Cornell timeout, a Bishop kill and a Columbia hitting error tied the score, the teams traded points to tie at 23-23 and 24-24 before the Lions again regained a two-point edge. The game was tied again at 26-26 and 27-27 before consecutive kills by Bishop gave Cornell match point. After the Lions scored a point, the junior hitter tied the school record of career kills (1,212) and ended the contest by a score of 30-28.
Lions leaders along with Viti were first-year Ashley Kim with 15 digs and sophomore Cassie Ligh with 10 digs. Columbia takes on Princeton on Friday, November 11th in Princeton, N.J. Game time is 7 p.m.
