He led the Ivy League in both sacks (8) and tackles for a loss (16.5) in 2006 and was 12th in I-AA in the latter category. A political science major, Schmidt was chosen second team All-Ivy League.
The eight scholarship finalists are Schmidt, Craig Dahl (safety, North Dakota State), Adi Filipovic (offensive line, Furman), Ray Gensler (defensive line, Robert Morris), Josh Hoke (placekicker, Coastal Carolina), Kyle Kinsell (defensive line, Davidson), James Lindgren (wide receiver, Northern Iowa), Jonathan Rueter (offensive line, Eastern Illinois).
Two of the student-athletes will receive Sixth Annual Division FCS ADA's $5,000 Postgraduate Scholarship during the Association's annual membership meeting held in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Convention, being held at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Florida, June 7-10, 2006. The two winners will be announced in April.
In order to qualify for a postgraduate scholarship, players must have been named to the 2006 FCS ADA Academic All-Star team, and either a senior or graduate student.

The committee is made up of Greg Burke, Northwestern State; Peter Fields, Montana State; Don Kaverman, chair, Southeast Missouri State; Marilyn McNeil, Monmouth; Jim Murphy, Davidson; and Tim Van Alstine, Western Illinois.
