ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – The Denver Broncos on Thursday signed safety Steve Cargile from their practice squad to their active roster December 7, head coach Mike Shanahan announced. The Broncos signed Cargile to their practice roster November 13.
Cargile, 6-2, 210 pounds, is a second-year safety who most recently was on Tampa Bay's roster during its 2006 training camp before he was waived by the club on Sept. 2. Cargile entered the NFL with Dallas as an undrafted free agent from Columbia on April 30, 2004.
Cargile, who spent the 2005 season out of football, spent the majority of his rookie year in 2004 on the Cowboys' practice squad. He was signed to Dallas' active roster for their regular-season finale in 2004 but was inactive for that contest (at N.Y. Giants, 1/2/05).
After playing his first three years at Columbia as a wide receiver, Cargile moved to safety as a senior and started 10 games that year while leading the Lions with 99 tackles as a second-team All-Ivy League selection.
Cargile was an all-state receiver and all-conference safety at St. Peter Chanel High School in Bedford, Ohio.
