NEW YORK ? Dr. M. Dianne Murphy announced today that Columbia University Athletics has created the position of Director of Student-Athlete Career Development and Services. Kimberly Curry, a former Ivy League student-athlete, will be the first to serve in the position.
“Columbia University, with its network of extraordinary alumni, and its location in New York City, has the ability to provide our student-athletes with a great number of internship and post-graduation employment opportunities,” remarks Dr. Murphy, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education. “In creating the position of Director of Student-athlete Career Development and Services, we recognize that our talented and bright student-athletes have a great deal to offer the world outside Columbia's gates. We are proud to be at the forefront of the Ivy League in recognizing the needs of our student-athletes in this area.”
Curry returns to the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education after a one-year stint in the Columbia University Office of the Controller. She is expected to begin in the position on September 11.
Prior to her time in the Office of the Controller, Curry served as an administrative assistant in the Athletics Department from 2002-2005, before being named executive assistant to the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education in March 2005.
“We are delighted to welcome Kimberly back to the Columbia Athletics family. Her concern for the well-being of our student-athletes has always been second-to-none,” Dr. Murphy says. “We know that she will be a significant asset for the athletics program in this important position.”
The new position reports directly to Jacqueline Blackett, Associate Athletics Director for Student-athlete Support Services. Says Blackett: “I am excited to have Kimberly take on this new position. As a former Ivy League student-athlete, she fully understands how important this position is for our current student-athletes.”
In her new position, Curry will assist Columbia's more than 800 student-athletes on a variety of issues and topics, including letter and resume writing, networking, interviewing and presentation skills – among other important areas related to securing meaningful career opportunities.
Curry, a 1996 graduate of Princeton University and a 2004 graduate of Columbia University Teachers College, was a four-year letterwinner for the Princeton women's basketball team. During her senior season at Princeton, she was named team captain, and earned the Herbert W. Hobler '44 Award, presented annually to the Tigers' women's basketball most valuable player. In 1996, Princeton University Athletics established the Kimberly Curry Award in her honor, presented annually to the women's basketball player that best exemplifies teamwork and dedication.
