Knowlin Named First Team, Gross Rookie of the Year in All-Ivy League Voting

NEW YORK -- For the second year in a row, a Lion is the Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Alex Gross was named the 2007 honoree, and Austin Knowlin, last year's award-winner, has been chosen first team All-Ivy League by a vote of the league's head coaches, the conference office announced. Five members of the 2007 Columbia football squad were recognized in the voting.

Austin Knowlin, who came within 12 yards of tying the school single-season record of 1000, was chosen to the first team. The sophomore wide receiver's 988 yards led the Ivy League and gives him 1541 for his career, fourth-best all-time at Columbia. His 11 touchdowns ranked him fifth in the Ivy League in scoring, and his 74 catches was second in the league behind 78 by Buddy Farnham of Brown.

Alex Gross made 80 tackles to rank among the most-ever for a first-year in the Ivy League. He led the team in that category, and was chosen the Ivy League Rookie of the Week four times; only one player in Ivy League history has earned that honor more than four times. Gross had 56 tackles in the final five games of the season, and had a team season-high 15 tackles in the final game of the fall vs. Brown. Eight of his tackles were for a loss and two were sacks.

Jon Rocholl was named second team All-Ivy League at punter. He set a new school single-season record for punting average (minimum 30 attempts) with 41.5 yards per boot. He fell just 0.1 short of tying the 20-attempt-minimum of 41.6 yards, held by former Columbia athletics director Ken Germann '43. A junior from Fort Wayne, Ind., Rocholl also broke the Columbia career field goals record with his 22nd early this season. He made eight for the season for 29 for his career, and also set the Columbia record for scoring by kicking and now has 132 career points. Rocholl had seven punts of 50-yards-or-longer, and 11 inside the opponents' 20-yard line.

Craig Hormann moved into second place on Columbia's all-time completions and passing yardage lists, and was honored with honorable mention All-Ivy League. He finished as the Ivy League's eighth-most productive passer with 6,201 yards, behind only John Witkowski '84CC on Columbia's all-time list. He was also second to Witkowski and fifth in the league in completions with 568. His 2,505 yards this season was fourth highest in school history. Hormann, a senior quarterback from Indianapolis who was one of the Lions' co-captains, threw for 12 touchdowns this season to give him 27 for his career, fifth-most on the Lions' all-time list.

Phillip Mitchell was named honorable mention All-Ivy League on the defensive line. The 6-foot-6 junior switched from defensive end to nose tackle midway through the season. At the time of the switch, he led the league in sacks with five, and he finished tied for fifth in that category. He was 24th in the league in tackles with 57. He had 13 tackles and forced a fumble against Yale.
