Men's Tennis Plays Virtually Even in 8-5 Loss to Second-Ranked Ole Miss

The upstart Lions, who reached the semifinals by upsetting a fifth-ranked duo from Alabama, played a virtually even match with the Ole Miss team of Jonas Berg and Erling Tveit, ranked second nationally in doubles. Columbia suffered just one early break point, as both teams held serve otherwise in the 8-5 match.
“I'm happy with the way we played,” the coach said. "We played as well as we can. [Mississippi] is a very good team; they got one quick (service) break.
“We had a few chances, but we couldn't convert. They showed why they're ranked so high. After they played us, they won the ?backdraw' by beating Texas Tech, the third seed, easily.”
Goswami smiled. It had been a fitting cap to Columbia's fall tennis season. “When you beat the fifth-ranked team in the country, and have a very good match with the second-ranked team, you'd have to call that a very successful trip.”
The men and women's tennis teams resume play in the winter ? the men in their own Columbia Classic January 25, the women at Boston University February 2.
