Women's Rowing Beats Penn in Connell Cup Regatta

"We had good racing against good crews," head coach Melanie Onufrieff said.
Columbia's varsity eight was most impressive. The Lions moved ahead of Penn in the second half of the race and held off the Quakers the rest of the way to win by 2.7 seconds, 5:55.2 to 5:57.9. Yale won the race in 5:48.0.
"The varsity did a nice job," Onufrieff said.
The Lion novice eight just missed a win over Penn itself, losing second place by just 11/100 of a second, as Yale gained the win. Columbia trailed the Quakers by larger margins in the second varsity eight and varsity fours races. They were due to compete in a Novice Fours race, but it was canceled when a boat sank at the starting line.
Despite her generally good feelings about the regatta, Onufrieff saw much that needed work. "We learned that we need to continue to improve," she said. The Lions row at Rutgers next week, facing the Scarlet Knights and Princeton.
