NEW YORK ? Aaron Kelton, Columbia's defensive secondary coach for the past two seasons, has been promoted to Defensive Coordinator, Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football Norries Wilson announced today. Kelton replaces Lou Ferrari, who is leaving Columbia University for personal reasons.
“Coach Kelton has defensive coordinator experience and he's done a great job with the defensive backs here at Columbia,” says Wilson. “I have the utmost confidence he will do a wonderful job coordinating the defense.”
Kelton came to Columbia after five years on the staff at Virginia State, from 2001 through 2005, where he was the defensive coordinator, and also coached the linebackers for four seasons and the secondary for one. The 2005 Trojan team held five of its 10 opponents to 14 or fewer points, while his 2004 defense collected 17 pass interceptions and 18 quarterback sacks, and forced 15 fumbles. He also was Virginia State's recruiting coordinator and Pro Liaison.
Kelton received a prized NFL Internship during the past year, which enabled him to serve as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars staff in 2008 during mini camp and the Indianapolis Colts coaching staff in July and August, 2007. He also attended the NCAA Expert Coaches Academy in Miami in May 2006.
In addition to Kelton's promotion to Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers Coach Greg Sigler has been promoted from part-time to full-time. Kelton will continue to coach the defensive secondary.
