NEW YORK -- The Columbia University athletics department recently held a youth clinic in commemoration of the Columbia-Barnard Athletic Consortium's 25th Anniversary on February 7. The event, which occurred prior to the women's basketball game against Princeton at Levien Gymnasium, included kids from around the area enjoying a day of competition and instruction from Columbia student-athletes and coaches.
The day began with an introductory speech from head women's basketball coach Paul Nixon. Following the address, the kids were ushered to six different stations, located throughout Dodge Fitness Center, and participated in six activities: archery, field hockey, lacrosse, rowing, soccer and volleyball.
From there, the group, which ranged from ages 7 to 13, assembled in University Gym for lunch and then enjoyed the women's basketball contest with the Tigers that evening.
The 2008-09 year marks the Silver Anniversary of the Columbia-Barnard Athletics Consortium. In a year-long celebration, Columbia Athletics will pay tribute to the administrators, coaches and student-athletes who have brought distinction to Columbia Athletics.
The youth clinic was one of three events scheduled for the 2008-09 academic year in conjunction with the Silver Anniversary. The third and final event is a year-end ceremonial luncheon scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, which will be followed by the 88th Annual Varsity C Celebration.
