Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football Norries Wilson's periodic update on Spring Practice.
Day 1
We have 88 students participating in spring practice in one form or another. Some are on limited duty based on the injury rehab they were assigned. Before the first period we talked briefly about not wasting days and the goal of the spring is to come out with the core of the two deep set for the fall.
First day of spring was like any other first day from an energy point of view. They flew around and were generally in great spirits. One big difference was the coaching was more refresher than new information for the majority of students out there. Of course there were some class conflicts but most were there by the time the ?team' period started. We are limited to shorts and helmets for the first three practices, but the team periods are always full speed, with a “tag off” finisher. The defense was hand cuffed to static fronts, and the offense was limited to two personnel groups. Both restrictions will ease as the days go forward.
Mistretta has moved from Sam to Mike. Don Miller has moved from RB to Will. Since we only have two available, touching the QB this spring is verboten, and makes for some tired arms.
Lou Miller and Jeff Adams on the same side looks like it may be an interesting matchup when the pads go on this Tuesday. We go again today and on tomorrow then it really becomes full speed on Tuesday afternoon.
If you don't listen,
You probably won't learn
If you don't learn,
You will probably lose.
Day 2
We had a good practice today.
There were a few alignment errors on both sides of the ball but there were not a lot of missed assignments.
We did not throw the ball great. The defense played the ball in the air a lot better today and probably should have picked off more than a few but ended up batting them down. The pass protection was better today than it was on Thursday.
The run game is harder to judge in shorts and playing tag off. There were some runs that broke clean, but the increased speed on defense showed on some runs that would have gotten out in the past that were bottled up by good pursuit.
After watching the film I think that Paruch had a good day. Definitely not the finished product but coming on as a Sam. He did a great job with his hands taking on and getting off block. Otis had more than a couple of passes defended and Groth did a few good things up front.
Have a great Sunday. We are back at it again tomorrow!
