NEW YORK - The Columbia field hockey team led 3-0 just 16 minutes into the game, but Bucknell stormed its way back in the second half forcing extra time. In the end it was Bucknell's Tayler Siergrist who beat Columbia's Christie O'Hara in sudden-victory penalty strokes to lift the Bison (4-1) over the Lions, 4-3.
The Lions came out on the attack from the opening whistle. Five minutes into the game Columbia was awarded a corner. Julia Garrison got a shot off from the top of the circle and first-year Katie DeSandis managed to redirect it past Bucknell's goalkeeper for her first collegiate goal, giving the Lions an early 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later Columbia would push that lead to two on a goal by sophomore Carson Christus. The Lions offense wasn't done and continued to pester the Bison's defense. At the 16 minute mark Garrison expanded their lead to three on an unassisted goal putting the Lions up 3-0.
The momentum began to swing late in the half towards Bucknell, but Columbia's O'Hara had three saves to preserve the Lions' lead at the break.
The second half belonged to the Bison who scored three unanswered goals to even the game at 3-3. The equalizer came off a set corner with just under five minutes remaining in regulation. Bucknell held a 12-1 advantage in penalty corner in the second half and outshot the Lions 8-2.
Neither team was able to score in 30 minutes of sudden-victory play. During that span Columbia outshot the Bison 7-5 and held a 6-4 advantage in corners. Both goalkeepers made a number of key saves during that span.
The tie continued through the first round of strokes as both Columbia and Bucknell made three of their five attempts. This was followed by a round of sudden-victory penalty strokes. Bucknell scored on its attempt while Columbia's went wide giving the Bison the victory.
Garrison finished with a goal and an assist, Hannah Smith picked up a defensive save, and O'Hara ended with nine saves in 115 minutes of action.
Columbia (0-2) will face Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn. on Sunday, September 13 at 2 p.m.
