NEW YORK – The Columbia men's tennis team had a tough weekend at the 2010 ITA Regional Indoor Championships hosted by Yale in New Haven, Conn., as the Lions failed to send any players past the second round.
Senior Kevin Kung was the only Columbia player seeded, so he had a bye in the first round of the main draw. In the second round, King faced off against Evan Bernstein of Cornell, losing 6-1, 1-6, 6-0.
Sophomore Cyril Bucher also lost his first match of the weekend, as he fell to Harvard's Casey MacMaster in the first round, 6-1, 6-2, while junior Rajeev Deb-Sen lost in the first round to Sergey Igel of St. Peter's, 6-4, 7-6. First-year Ian Laster also lost in the first round to Penn's Nikola Kocovic, 7-5, 7-6. Laster had more success in the consolation draw, as he beat Alex Frakes of St. Peter's, 6-2, 6-3, before falling to an NJIT player in straight sets.
Sophomore Nathaniel Gery was the lone Lion to notch a first round win in the main draw, as he beat Binghamton's Bastian Bornkessel, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1. But in the second round, he was matched up with No.3 seed Akash Muppidi, and lost to the Boston College player, 6-3, 6-1.
Doubles was not much better for the Lions, as Gery and Kung fell to a duo from Sacred Heart, 8-3. Brothers Tizian and Cyril Bucher teamed up to notch a first round win, 8-5 over a Quinnipiac pair, but couldn't continue the run, falling in the second round to two players from Cornell, 8-2.
