WORCESTER, Mass. - The Columbia field hockey team erupted for five goals en route to a 5-1 non-conference win against Holy Cross on Sunday, October 3. Gabby Kozlowski had a pair of goals, Julia Garrison added one, and Lauren Byrne and Anna Tichy each scored their first goals of the season. Christie O'Hara earned the win in goal making five saves.
"Today we showed the depth of our team with everyone playing and contributing to our success in some fashion," said head coach Marybeth Freeeman. "Now, in the latter half of our season, we will need to take this focus and attention to detail to the next level."
Kozlowski took the first three shots of the game, and finally converted on her third at 9:28 off a broken corner play to give Columbia an early 1-0 lead. Two minutes later the Lions would get another corner opportunity and Garrison fired a shot that was blocked. Kozlowski collected the loose ball and buried it to the corner for her second goal of the game at 11:38 to put the Lions' ahead 2-0.
Garrison was awarded a penalty stroke at 24:05, but Holy Cross' Kelly Sotsky made a huge save to keep Columbia's lead to two. Just over six minutes later, however, Garrison received a pass from the left side from sophomore Katie DeSandis at the top of the circle, this time beating Sotsky and pushing the Lions' lead to three at 30:54.
Columbia dominated the first half offensively, outshooting the Crusaders 12-3, and held a 6-2 advantage in corners.
Holy Cross cut its deficit to two four minutes into the second half when Kara Gonnerman converted on a penalty stroke, picking up her first goal of the season.
Neither team managed to score for the next 14 minutes of play as both goalies made a pair of saves during that stretch.
Columbia pushed its lead back to three at 53:07 when Tichy, a first-year, scored her first collegiate goal off a scramble in the circle. Fourteen minutes later, senior tri-captain Byrne scored her first goal of the season to give the Lions a 5-1 victory.
For the game, Columbia outshot the home team 18-11 and had eight corners compared to the Crusaders' five. Twenty different Lions saw action in the game. With the win, the Lions improved to 5-4 overall.
Columbia returns to action on Friday, October 8 when it hosts Monmouth at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue at 4 p.m.
