NEW YORK -- Columbia University junior Judie Lomax was honored on Tuesday for her record-setting season as she was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I Women's Basketball All-Star Team. Lomax was a first-team selection and joins UConn stars Tina Charles and Maya Moore, Virginia junior and Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year Monica Wright, and Delaware first-year Elena Delle Donne on the first team.
Lomax, the first Columbia player to ever earn Ivy League Women's Basketball Player of the Year accolades, is on the verge of accomplishing something no other female in NCAA Division I history has done. After leading the nation in rebounding as a sophomore at 14.3 rebounds per contest, she currently leads the nation at 14.2 boards per game in 2009-10.
If Lomax remains the leader through postseason play, she will become the first Division I player in women's basketball history to win back-to-back rebounding titles. She currently leads Pauline Love of Southern Mississippi by 1.4 rebounds per game and Shanavia Dowdell of Louisiana Tech by 1.7. Dowdell and the Lady Techsters will take on Florida State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, March 20. Love's season is complete.
The Ivy League leader in scoring (18.6 ppg), rebounding, steals (2.6 spg) and minutes played (37.6 mpg) this year, Lomax became the first player in Columbia history to be named to the All-Ivy League first team twice in a career. She also set a single-season school record with 72 steals, a season after becoming the Columbia single-season record holder in rebounds with 401. She currently ranks second on the all-time career rebounding chart at 799, trailing only Kathy Gilbert '91CC (937).
The Barnard College student was a key component of a Lions' team that set a single-season record for wins in a season with 18, and also finished the year in third place in the Ivy League, the best finish in school history.
