
Men's Tennis Earns 5-1 Victory over Texas Arlington

NEW YORK – The Columbia men's tennis team improved to 10-3 on the season Friday with a 5-1 victory over the University of Texas at Arlington. The win, which took place in Arlington, Texas, was the third in a row for the Lions on their 2010 spring break trip.
Columbia set the tone for the match early, as the Lions swept the doubles point with ease. Senior co-captains Jonathan Wong and Mihai Nichifor won in the No. 1 spot, 8-5, while Haig Schneiderman and Nathaniel Gery notched an 8-6 win at No. 2. Meanwhile, Kevin Kung and Rajeev Deb-Sen shut out their opponents in the No. 3 spot, 8-0.
Four straight set wins in singles sealed the deal for the Lions. At the bottom of the lineup, first-year Gery had the easiest win of the day, as he went 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6. Junior Kung was the next to finish his Arlington opponent, as he won at No. 5, 6-1, 6-3.
Columbia also had wins in the top two spots, as Wong won at No. 1 7-5, 6-3, and Schneiderman had a 6-3, 7-5 win in the No. 2 spot. Deb-Sen was also on his way to a win at No. 4, but his match was halted when the team win was clinched, 7-5, 2-6, 2-1, DNF. Arlington's lone point came in the No. 3 spot, where first-year Cyril Bucher fell 6-4, 6-3.
The Lions have one more match in Texas before returning to New York City and the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. Columbia is slated to take on Sacramento State on the UT-Arlington courts, Saturday, March 20 at 10 a.m.
