Women's Rowers Win Three of Five Races on First Day of GW Invitational
4/9/2010 10:00:00 PM | Women's Rowing
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Braving strong winds that raced across the wide Potomac River, Columbia Women's Rowing took three of five races from Central Florida on the first day of the George Washington Invitational Regatta.
The defending champion Lions won the second varsity eights and both varsity fours against the Knights, who didn't compete in last year's regatta. Columbia came tantalizingly close to a sweep, losing the varsity eights and third varsity eights races by a combined 4.7 seconds.
The latter was one of the closest races of the day, as onlookers were unable to discern a winner even as the two crews crossed the finish line.
"I think that was the most exciting race on the river today," head coach Melanie Onufrieff said. "It was back and forth the whole way down the course, and no one could tell who won." Central Florida ultimately was declared the winner, by a scant 8/10 of a second.
The Lions were victorious in both varsity fours races, taking the A Four by 8.2 seconds over Central Florida, and the B Four by more than a minute.
Columbia will continue defense of its title Saturday, facing St. Joseph's in the morning and Georgetown in the afternoon. The Lions' stirring varsity eights victory over St. Joe's was one of the highlights of last year's GW Regatta.
