NEW YORK - Columbia sophomore women's basketball player Agata Jankova will get an opportunity to represent her country this summer at the European Under-20 Championships, presented by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
Jankova will suit up for her native Slovakia at the Division B Championship in Kavadarci, Morocco. The team will open the tournament against Portugal on July 16 in a preliminary round matchup.
Austria, Israel and Greece are also in Slovakia's Group A, while Macedonia, Great Britain, Hungary, Czech Republic and Belgium comprise Group B. The top four teams from each group will advance to quarterfinal-round play on July 22.
The two teams that make their way to the finals of Division B will automatically qualify for Division A play in 2011. They will replace the two teams relegated to Division B by way of the European U-20 Division A Championship in Latvia, which will take place from July 15-25.
Jankova is no stranger to international play, as she took part in the FIBA European Under-16 Championship for Slovakia in 2006. She played in a total of eight games and averaged 9.9 points and 3.3 assists per game. The 6-1 forward put together a fine performance against Hungary, posting 20 points, eight assists and four rebounds in 38 minutes of action.
