
Field Hockey Hosts #4 Princeton Friday, Travels to Holy Cross Sunday

NEW YORK - The Columbia Field Hockey team welcomes No. 4 Princeton on Friday, October 1 under the lights at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue. Prior to the game which begins at 6 p.m., the newly renovated field will be dedicated in a brief ceremony. The Lions will then play a non-conference road game at Holy Cross on Sunday, October 3 at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lions are coming off a heartbreaking double-overtime loss to Cornell on
September 24. Columbia came from
behind to tie the game twice, ultimately forcing extra time. After neither team managed to score in
the first overtime period, it was the Big Red that converted with 2:23
remaining in the second overtime period off a corner to claim the sudden
victory.
Julia Garrison scored both goals for the Lions, bringing her season total to six. With her second goal of the game, the senior tri-captain moved into second all-time in career points with 60 in the Columbia record books.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
The Tigers are off to a hot start this season, boasting an unblemished 7-0
record, and ranking fourth in the nation.
Earlier this week Princeton knocked off the top-ranked Maryland
Terrapins, 4-2, in a battle of the un-beatens.
The Tigers have outscored their opponents 38-5 this season, led by junior Kathleen Sharkey who leads the nation in scoring with 17 goals. Three other players have double-digit points this season. Christina Maida has started all seven games in goal and sports a 0.67 goals against average.
DEDICATING THE NEW
TURF
This summer a brand new playing surface, AstroTurf 12, was
installed, giving the program is own dedicated venue for practice and
competition.
Prior to the game on Friday night, the Columbia Field Hockey Venue will be officially dedicated. Dr. M. Dianne Murphy, Director, Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education, as well as head coach Marybeth Freeman will provide remarks before the opening whistle.
SCOUTING THE
CRUSADERS
Holy Cross enters the weekend 0-8 with
Jamie Caniglia leading her team offensively with four points. Kelly Sotsky has seen all the action in
goal for the Crusaders this season and holds a 3.92 goals against average. Holy Cross will play Bucknell on
Saturday before welcoming the Lions on Sunday.
LOOKING AHEAD
Columbia will host Monmouth on Friday, October 8 at the Columbia Field
Hockey Venue at 4 p.m.
