
Field Hockey Set for Vonnie Gros Classic

NEW YORK - Coming off an impressive win earlier this week, the Columbia field hockey team will hit the road to take part in the 5th Annual Vonnie Gros Classic hosted by West Chester University. The Lions will take on the host Golden Rams on Friday, September 10 at 6:30 p.m., followed by Villanova on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Columbia's offense erupted in its 6-2 win against Hofstra on Wednesday. Sophomore Gabby Kozlowski had a hat trick, while first-year Liz Malone and sophomore Bridget DeSandis each scored their first collegiate goals. Senior Julia Garrison added a goal and an assist, and Hannah Smith, Leti Freaney and Caitlin Mullins each picked up an assist. Christie O'Hara made seven saves in goal.
The Lions held a 2-1 lead entering the break despite being outshot 7-3. After DeSandis pushed Columbia's lead to two, Hofstra managed to pull within one on a goal by Krizia Layne at 56:15. The Lions then broke open the game with three unaswered goals over a five minute stretch en route to their second victory of the season.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN RAMS
West Chester is 3-0 so far this season with wins over Fairfield, Sacred Heart and Lehigh. Most recently, the Golden Rams blanked Lehigh 3-0, picking up their second shutout of the season. Nicole Fiorila paces her team offensively with seven points (three goals, one assist), while six other players have scored at least one goal. Kristen Arnold and Gabby Panasiewicz have split time in goal, surrendering just one combined goal this season.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
After a 12 day hiatus, Villanova returns to action this weekend with a 0-2 record. The Wildcats dropped their season opener in overtime 2-1 against Monmouth, and most recently fell to Maryland 5-0. Jordan Lynn has the lone goal for Villanova this year, while Megan Goelz has played every minute in cage for the Wildcats, sporting a .650 saves percentage.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING!
This weekend marks the first meeting between Columbia and both West Chester and Villanova.
LOOKING AHEAD
Columbia will travel to Rhode Island next weekend for a pair of games. First up, the Lions begin Ivy League play when they take on Brown on Saturday, September 18 at 1 p.m. The following day, Columbia will play Providence at 1 p.m.
