PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Columbia University men's golf team didn't have long to reminisce about its recent trip to Scotland. The Lions open their fall season, and their quest for a fourth straight Ivy League title, at the Rutgers Invitational on Sept. 10-11. The 36-hole event will take place at the Rutgers University Golf Course and will feature 18 teams.
Rutgers, Fairleigh Dickinson, Seton Hall, Monmouth, UMass-Lowell, Long Island, Dowling, Rider, Wagner, Columbia, Lehigh, Hofstra, Lafayette, Newberry, Fairfield, St. Peter's, Post and Adelphi will all take to the links on Friday morning, beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
The Rutgers University Golf Course was founded in 1961 with the construction of the present day 18-hole layout that was expertly designed by Hal Purdy, a noted golf architect. The course was officially opened May 29, 1963. Today, the par-71 Rutgers Golf Course (par-72 for women) can be stretched to 6,337 yards and features a course rating of 70.5 and a slope of 130.
Columbia last appeared at the Rutgers Fall Invitational in 2006, when it tied for third out of 16 teams. Chris Condello tied for fifth individually after back-to-back rounds of 71.
The Lions return seven members of the 2009-10 squad that won the program's third consecutive Ivy League championship and earned a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Senior Clark Granum tied for the individual lead through 54 holes at the Ivy League Championships, and is a three-time All-Ivy League first team selection.
