HANOVER, N.H. -- In a game in which turnovers were the story, Columbia recovered a Dartmouth fumble on the opening kickoff but was unable to convert and the Big Green took over from that point.
Dartmouth running back Nick Schwieger rushed for 157 yards and three scores as the Big Green shutout the Lions 37-0 at Memorial Field on a cold, dry Saturday afternoon.
Dartmouth scored on Greg Patton's five-yard run with 8:19 left to play in the first quarter in a drive that went 12 plays and 70 yards. On the ensuing drive, a bad snap went over the head of Columbia punter Paul Delaney resulting in a safety to make it 9-0.
Dartmouth scored with six minutes remaining in the third to make it 16-0 at the break.
Columbia won the toss and opted to defer, so the Lions started the second half with the ball at the Columbia 24 yard line. Marcorus Garrett rushed for 18 yards on the first play of the half, but fumbled at the Columbia 42 yard line and Dartmouth recovered.
The turnover proved costly as Dartmouth scored on the ensuing drive, making it 23-0.
Dartmouth added two scores in the third quarter, one after another Columbia fumble, and the final after a Columbia interception.
Jerry Bell started at quarterback for the Lions, filling in for a hurt Sean Brackett. Garrett finished with 61 yards rushing, while Mike Stephens led the receivers with 35 yards on four catches.
Nick Mistretta led all playes with 11 tackles and an interception, while A.J. Maddox added ten with 1.5 tackles for a loss.
Columbia (0-6, 0-3 Ivy League) returns to action on Saturday when the Lions host Yale for a noon kickoff televised on the YES Network.
