CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Three early runs by Radford in the first two innings of the contest proved to be the difference as the Columbia softball team were edged by the Highlanders, 3-1, at the Under Armour Invitational on Sunday.
The Lions scored their lone run of the game in the sixth inning, as back-to-back doubles by seniors Anne Marie Skylis and Karen Tulig brought Columbia to within 3-1. But Radford's Jackie Jenkins was summoned from the bullpen and set down the final four Lions to pick up the save.
Radford jumped out to an early 1-0 cushion thanks to a leadoff home run by Hannah Ojeda. The Highlanders would tack on two more runs in the next frame, with Ojeda delivering on a two-out RBI single to put the score at 3-0.
From there, senior Maggie Johnson shut down the Radford offense, retiring the final 11 batters she faced. Johnson closed the contest allowing just four hits and only one earned run while striking out one in six innings of work.
First-year Morgan Cook and sophomore Jennifer Bergeron had the other two hits for Columbia, who closed the tournament 0-5.
Columbia will continue its season at the Rebel Spring Games on Friday, March 11 with a doubleheader.
