PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Brown scored 22 unanswered points in the
second and third quarters to defeat Columbia 22-6 at Brown Stadium in the
season finale for both teams.
Columbia finishes the season at 3-7, 2-5 Ivy League and Brown improves
to 7-3, 4-3 Ivy League.
Columbia scored on its second and third possessions of the
game. After Columbia's defense
held Brown on fourth and eight from the Columbia 30, the Lions took over on
downs and started a drive 8:35 in the first quarter. On third and nine from the Brown 47, Columbia quarterback
Sean Brackett connected with first-year Chris Connors for a 32-yard gain to put
Columbia at the Brown 15-yard line.
Columbia failed to convert on a third and four, and Luke Eddy made a
27-yard field goal to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.
The Lions' defense forced a three-and-out by pressuring Pat
Donnelly into intentionally grounding the ball. Columbia got the ball back on the Brown 45 after a Brown
player hit Columbia first-year Brandon Blackshear after a fair-catch call.
Marcorus Garrett rushed for a 21-yard gain and the first
quarter ended with Columbia on the Brown 11-yard line. Eddy came back out and hit the 30-yard
field goal to make it 6-0 Columbia.
Brown erased the lead on the next possession, 76 yards on
six plays for a touchdown.
Donnelly hit Jonah Fay for a 29-yard touchdown pass on fourth and two
from the Columbia 29.
Brown struck again on another 29-yard pass on a fourth down
from the Columbia 29 to make it 14-6 at half time.
Brown scored on the opening possession of the third quarter
to make it 22-6. The Bears drove
80 yards on 11 plays in a five-minute drive.
Columbia had a couple of three-and-out series before their
final series of the third quarter. The Lions started the fourth quarter on the
Brown 48. Brackett rushed for a
first down and hit Connors for a 17-yard gain and the Lions were deep in red
zone with first and goal from the two.
After a holding call, a tackle for a loss and a sack, Columbia went for
it on fourth and goal from the 17.
An incomplete pass gave Brown back the ball on downs.
The Lions were unable to covert on two Bears turnovers and
Brown held on for the 22-6 final.
Senior Ryan Murphy led the Lions with nine tackles. Mike Waller had another tremendous day
for Columbia with six tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. Ray Pesanello had the forced
fumble. Josh Martin finished with seven
tackles.
Offensively, Brackett went 19-34-1 for 175 yards. Marcorus Garrett rushed for 56 yards,
giving him 957 for the year, the third best single-season rushing total in
Columbia history.
