Former Lion Great Marty Domres '69CC Passes Away

The former Lion and NFL quarterback was 78 years old

NEW YORK — Columbia Athletics mourns the passing of Marty Domres '69CC, who passed away on October 13 at the age of 78. Domres was one of the most accomplished student-athletes in the football program's history and reached the highest levels of professional football.

A native of Erie, Pennsylvania, Domres made his mark as Columbia's quarterback in the late 1960s. He earned All-Ivy League honors and established himself as one of the most prolific passers in program and Ancient Eight history. In his senior season of 1968, he led the Ivy League in passing. A three-year starter at Columbia, Domres graduated holding 15 school records and two national records for passing and total offense.

"Marty represented the best of what it means to be a Columbian," said Peter Pilling, Campbell Family Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education. "He was a gifted athlete, a devoted teammate, and an ambassador for Ivy League football at the highest level. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and former teammates."

After graduating from Columbia College with a degree in economics, Domres was selected in the first round of the 1969 NFL-AFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. Over the course of his eight-year pro football career, he played for the Chargers, Baltimore Colts, San Francisco 49ers, and New York Jets.

Following his football career, Domres built a career in finance and business. He remained a proud Columbia alumnus and a dedicated supporter of the University. He was inducted into the Columbia Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Domres, stepson, Christian Cummings, and his sisters, Cindy Domres, Barbara Rehberg, and Nancy Flattery.
