
Spotlight on the Football Incoming Class: Quarterbacks/Running Backs

NEW YORK - Over the next week gocolumbialions.com will take a closer look at the Columbia Football incoming recruiting class. Today the spotlight is on the quarterbacks and running backs. There are two first-year quarterbacks and three running backs in Columbia incoming recruiting class.
"We are excited about the competition that our freshman backfield brings to our team," said Pete Mangurian, Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football. "Our two young quarterbacks bring a level of intelligence, athleticism and production that we are excited to incorporate into the most difficult position to play in our offense. All three running backs play with a physical, explosive playing style. Each back is different and each is looking forward to defining his individual role in our offense."
Trevor McDonagh, a 6-3, 205-pound QB from St. Louis University High School in St. Louis, Missouri, is a two-time first team all-conference and a second team all-state honoree. As a senior he completed 195 passes on 334 attempts for 3440 yards. He amassed 29 passing touchdowns with seven rushing TDs.

Hank Trumbull, a 6-4, 200-pound quarterback from Manhattan Beach, California, is an impressive dual threat that threw for 3,614 yards as a senior with 44 touchdowns. In his final year at Chadwick School, he was team captain, Prep League MVP, first team All-CIF, second team All-Southern California and ESPN second team all-state. Trumbull was a three-time first-team all-league and three-time first team All-CIF.

Mike Gerst, younger brother of Columbia rising senior Nick Gerst, joins the Lions after a successful career at perennial high school powerhouse Bergen Catholic in Northern New Jersey. As a senior, the 5-11 Gerst rushed for 379 yards on 53 carries and three touchdowns. He added four receiving TDs on 15 receptions with 193 yards in the 2011 season.

Cameron Molina was a three-sport athlete at Tuscarora High School in Leesburg, Va. Molina earned letters in football, lacrosse and track, captaining football and lacrosse as a junior and senior. He earned first team all-district honors in 2010 and 2011 as a running back, but also played outside linebacker. As a running back, he amassed 1292 yards rushing with 19 touchdowns his senior season, en route to earning Virginia State Division 3 Player of the Year.

Mike Zunica (pronounced zoo-NICK-ah), played baseball and football at St. Rita of Cascia High School in Chicago, Illinois. Zunica was first team All-Chicago Catholic League as a senior, totaling 82 rushes for 453 yards with four TDs, and 19 catches for 155 yards and 2 receiving TDs. St. Rita won the Catholic League in 2010.
