Women's Track & Field Takes Indoor Metropolitan Championship Title

NEW YORK - For the second consecutive year the Columbia women's indoor track & field team grabbed the Metropolitan Indoor Track & Field Championships title at The Armory on Friday, Jan. 25. The Lions totaled 172 team points, including eight first place finishes to capture the victory in the 15 team field.

The women's distance runners led the charge with wins in the 1000m, one mile, 5000m, and 4000m distance medley runs. The Lions claimed the top two finishers in the 1000m and 1 mile events with Erin Gillingham out in front of the 1000m at 2:48.25 seconds. Olivia Sadler was right behind her at 2:48.91 seconds to take second place. The one mile run went to Mallory Anderson clocking in at 4:58.92, while Aryn Folland was the runner-up in 5:03.41 seconds.

Chelsea Carrick added a win in the 500m event finishing with a time of 17:18.92. Individual winners Anderson and Gillingham, joined with Trina Bills and Madeline Rathbun in the 4000m distance medley to take the event with a combined time of 11:46.07 seconds.

Junior Marvellous Iheukwumere continues to shine in the early indoor season once again, winning the 200m in a time of 24.29 seconds. Some impressive runner-up finishes from Bills in the 800m in 2:15.16 seconds and Iris Chijioke in the 60m hurdles in 8.86 seconds, also showed positive signs for the Lions this season.

In the field, Columbia shined in the jumping events as Madley Magee grabbed a victory in the high jump clearing 1.65m and Nadia Eke in the triple jump. The Lions posted a 1-2-3 sweep in the triple jump behind Eke's win with a leap of 12.33m. QueenDenise Okeke claimed second place with 12.17m and Addy Sonaike took third with 12.00m, respectively.

The men's team also grabbed a few wins in the Metropolitan Championships on Friday. Tait Rutherford had an impressive win in the 3000m event clocking in with a time of 8:29.58 seconds. The tandem of Casey Adams, Brendon Fish, Brendan Donley, and Nicolas Composto combined for a time of 10:05.29 for a victory in the 4000m distance medley.

Later Friday night, the Lions competed in several events of the NYRR's Night at The Armory to add to a solid day on the track. Paul Ross, Paul Snyder and Joseph Kotran earned a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1 mile run. Ross posted a first place time of 4:15.35 seconds, Snyder took second at 4:16.22 seconds and Kotran followed in third at 4:16.22 seconds. Ben Eversole went on to claim the 3000m with a time of 8:20.97 for another win on the night for Columbia.

Up next, the Columbia track & field teams will be back in action at The Armory on Friday, Feb. 1 for the two-day New Balance Collegiate Invitational.
