TULSA, Okla. - The Columbia men's tennis team concluded competition at the 2014 ITA Men's Tennis All-American Championships on Saturday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Four Lions traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to compete against the nation's best-of-the-best in college tennis.
Three Lions took the court in the qualifying draw to open the championships. Senior Max Schnur fell to 93rd-ranked Dennis Mkrtchian of UCLA. The Bruins' player claimed the 7-6(4), 6-3 win to advance.
Senior Ashok Narayana and junior Dragos Ignat were both one singles victory shy of earning a spot in the main draw, but came up just short. Narayana defeated Michigan State's Partick Mullane (7-5, 7-6(7)) and Texas Tech's 65th-ranked Hugo Dojas, who was seeded 15th (6-3, 6-3) before falling to Drake's Ben Lott, 7-5, 6-3. Ignat downed North Flordia's Norbert Nemcsek (6-2, 6-1) and UMBC's Jaan Kononov (6-3, 6-4) before dropping a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 decision to 106th-ranked Adrien Berkowics of Texas.
In the singles main draw, senior Winston Lin, who ranks 8th in the nation and was seeded sixth in the championships, picked up a 7-5, 7-5 win versus Tomas Stillman of UTSA. Lin's run came up short, however, as he went toe-to-toe with the Virginia's Thai-Son Kwiatkowski. Lin fell to the 80th-ranked racquet, 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3.
Narayana and Schnur teamed up in the doubles main draw. The sixth-ranked duo downed Denver's 18th-ranked pair of Henry Craig and Alex Gasson, 5-7, 7-6, 1-0 (8) and Texas Tech's Dojas and Felipe Soares, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6), to advance. In a rematch of the last season's USTA/ITA Indoor National Championships between Narayana and Schnur and the top-ranked tandem from Tennessee Mikelis LIbietis and Hunter Reese, the Lions cam up short, 6-3, 6-4.
Columbia will take two weeks off before heading to Flushing Meadows, New York, for the ITA Northeast Regional Championships.
