
Women's Tennis Jiang/Leung Upset Falls Short at 2014 USTA/ITA NIIC

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Tina Jiang and Crystal Leung put on an impressive show on the first day of play at the 2014 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
In the doubles round of 32 Jiang and Leung clashed against Kentucky's Nadia Ravita and Aldila Sujadi. The Lions took the first set, 6-2, but the Wildcats bounced back in the second, 4-6, to level the match. In the tiebreaker, the team's traded points before Jiang and Leung prevailed to a 10-7 victory.
Up against the tournament's top-seed and the eighth-ranked tandem in the ITA, Clemson's Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies, Jiang and Leung carried their momentum into the Round of 16. The sophomore-senior partnership claimed the first set, 3-6, before dropping a battle in the second 7-6(6). For the second straight match the 19th-ranked Columbia pair's fate came in a tiebreaker, but this time the Tigers handed the Lions a 10-12 defeat.
Rima Asatrian and Kanika Vaidya also competed for the Lions on day one. The 41st-ranked first-year/junior tandem fell to the racquets of North Carolina's Ashley Dai and Kate Vialle, 6-2, 6-3.
Vaidya also took the court in the singles draw against No. 34 Saska Gavrlovska of Texas A&M. The first set saw a strong battle with the Aggies grabbing the first set 7-5. Gavrloska would outlasts Vaidya 6-0 in the second set to grab the win.
