
Balanced Attack Leads Volleyball Past Bryant, 3-0

STORRS, Conn. - The Columbia volleyball team received a well balanced attack to cruise to a straight set victory over Bryant Saturday night at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion to wrap-up play at the UConn Classic. The victory came by set scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-17.
Columbia's (4-5) attack saw six different players record a point to combine for a season-best .276 hitting percentage. Juniors Atlanta Moye-McLaren and Bailey Springer contributed 12-kill efforts each to lead the attack. Sophomore Zoe Jacobs chipped in eight kills while junior Katarina Jovicic, who earned a spot on the all-tournament team, added six kills. Jennifer Petrovich handled the setting duties for the Lions as the sophomore passed out 32 assists.
Moye-McLaren notched 11 digs to record her first double-double on the year and 11th of her career while senior Charlee Dyroff led the Lions defensive charge with 17 digs. Petrovich registered 12 digs to add to the effort as Jacobs posted five blocks to lead Columbia's effort at the net.
The Bulldogs (3-14) were led by Elena Lohr's double-double effort of 10 kills and 10 digs.
After Bryant scored the first two points of the set, Columbia rattled off seven unanswered points behind Jacobs at the service line to take a 7-2 lead early in the first set. The Bulldogs tallied a point, before the Lions answered with six more points to more the score to 13-3, forcing a Bryant timeout. Out of the break the Bulldog used a 6-3 stretch to pull within five, 16-9, as head coach Brie Katz called for a break. It was all Columbia out of the timeout as the Lions pour on the points including three straight kills by Moye-McLaren that set-up match point for Columbia, 24-12. The Lions went on to take the first set off a kill by Springer, 25-15.
Knotted at six in the second stanza, Columbia jump-started a8-0 run to force a Bryant timeout as the Lions led, 14-6. Columbia didn't lose momentum out of the break as the Lions cruised to a 18-9 lead on a kill from Moye-McLaren. A 7-3 spurt by the Bulldogs brought the score to 21-16, but it was all Columbia the rest of the way as the Lions tallied four of the final six points en route to a 25-18 set victory.
Columbia found itself in an 8-5 hole to open the third and final set before Jovicic scored two kills and combined for a block with Jacobs to equalize the score at 8-8. After back-and-forth points a kill by Springer gave the Lions a slim 10-9 edge that blossomed into a 17-12 advantage. Another tally by Springer ignited a 7-2 spurt that closed the match, 25-17.
The Lions returns to action when they open the Ivy League portion of its schedule Saturday, Sept. 27 against Cornell. The 2 p.m. match at Levien Gymnasium will serve as Columbia's Dig Pink contest.
