Women's Tennis Competes at Mizzou Invite

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Columbia women's tennis team completed its opening weekend of competition Sunday at the Mizzou Invite at The Plaza Tennis Center with a number of strong performances.
In singles, Kanika Vaidya and first-years Alexandra Solovyev and Laura MacMullin registered 2-1 records, respectively. After opening her junior campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 setback to Mississippi State's No. 42 Georgiana Patrasc, the 85th-ranked player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) downed Nebraska's Mary Hanna, 6-3, 6-3, and Mizzou's Kelli Hine, 6-4, 6-2. Solovyev debuted her collegiate career with victories over the Bulldogs' Timea Guibe (6-3, 0-6, 6-3) and the Huskers' Lisa Andersson (3-6, 6-2, 6-3), before falling to the Tigers' Beatriz Machado Santos 6-1, 6-2. MacMullin, who earned Mizzou Invite No. 6 singles honors, downed MSU's Corder, 6-2, 6-2, and Nebraska's MacKenna Maddox, 6-3, 7-5, and fell to Mizzou's Spearman, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5.
First-years Rima Asatrian and Adi Milestien also took the singles court for the first time in their collegiate career, while senior Crystal Leung and sophomore Vivian Cheng also competed on the singles court.
A combination of Columbia tandems competed in doubles action. Vaidya and Soloyev paired up on the doubles court for 1-1 mark by defeating Santos and Cassidy Spearman of Mizzou (8-6) and downing Nebraska's twosome of Lechmicke and Andersson, 8-5. Vaidya partnered up with another rookie, Asatrian, for an undefeated 2-0 performance. The pair bested the Tigers' Santos and Spearman, 8-5, and the Huskers' Maggy Lehmick and Spurti Shivalingaiah, 8-2. Asatrian joined forces with Leung for a 1-0 record after defeating MSU's Patrasch and Jennifer Brown.
Four Lions will head to Pacific Palisades, California, Saturday, Sept. 27 for the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
