ATLANTA, Ga. - In its season opener, the No. 38 Columbia women's tennis team fell just short as the Lions dropped a 4-1 match to No. 18 Georgia Tech on the Yellow Jackets' campus at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex on the first day of ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Columbia (0-1) dropped the doubles point as Georgia Tech (1-0) went ahead off victories on the second and third doubles courts. Adi Milstein and Vivian Cheng fell in the third spot, 6-2, to Natasha Prokhnevska and Johnnise Renaud. While the 42nd-ranked tandem of Tina Jiang and Crystal Leung were battling Rasheeda McAdoo and Alexis Prokopuik on the first court, Rima Asatrian and Alexandra Solovyev were unable to fend off Paige Hourigan and Kendal Woodard, 6-4, sending the doubles point to the Yellow Jackets.
Straight-set singles matches were in the majority on the day and the Yellow Jackets claimed the first singles match as Milstein fell to Woodard in the sixth position, 6-2, 6-1. Solovyev was the lone Lion to make a tally in the win column as the first-year upset No. 81 Prokhenvska, 6-2, 6-3, in the fourth spot. Columbia did not pick up momentum off Solovyev's win, however, as Jiang fell to No. 63 Renaud, 6-2, 6-2, in the top spot. At third singles, Leung dropped a 7-5, 6-3, battle to McAdoo that sealed the 4-1 victory for Georgia Tech.
The Lions are back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. when they take the court for the consolation match of ITA Kick-Off Weekend versus No. 19 Oklahoma State or #31 Texas Tech.
